HOW TO ANSWER: Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Is one of the most cringe-worthy interview questions of all time. This question is frustrating to many because one can’t see far enough into the future to tell what’s made for dinner tonight. So in what sense does an interviewer asks you where you will be in the next five years. Actually, by asking this question the interviewer tries to know about your long term career goals. So you should answer this question by telling the interviewer about your career plans and expectations.



The two reasons why interviewers ask about your future career goals and objectives.


  • They want to know whether you are going to stay after put in the new position.

  • They want to know if your long-term career aspirations are compatible with the organisation.



Here is what the interviewer does not want to hear:


  • Do not joke about how you will be the CEO of the company in the next five years.


  • Do not share detailed schemes to be promoted within the business. 


  • Don’t talk Pipe dreams of becoming famous, owning a company or going back to school. 


  • Doing "Hmmm" And, "Ummmmmm" Or saying, "I don't know. It's hard to tell." will do you more harm than getting selected for the job.


So what are interviewers trying to know from this question?


  • Well, when the interviewer’s question, "Where do you see yourself in five years? "They're really asking, "What are your career goals in this position? ”


  • They want to know whether or not this position will satisfy you and that your long term goals are compatible with the companies vision.


  • Hiring managers effectiveness depends on how many vacancies she can fill with talented employees.


  • Her success depends on keeping talented employees at work and if an employee leaves it costs the company money and time.

  • So the “ where do you see yourself in 5 years” interview question is how interviewers indirectly ask if you’re going to stay or quit in the middle.


Here’s the sample answer for the interview question 

where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?


“Over the next few years, I want to explore and acquire project management skills. I want to have obtained experience in leading projects for big clients in five years. I will be looking for ways to extend my duties in this position in order to work towards my goal."


This answer outlines a career path that is not too detailed. It means that you're inspired. 

It also identifies a legitimate career aim to gain experience in project management.
